Bright Idea
While you may not be able to provide benefits, such as health insurance, you may be able to help tutors get lower rates by signing up for such plans as a group.
Your Code of Ethics
Tutors, like teachers, need to uphold a code of ethics and maintain moral integrity in their work with students. While this may seem obvious, itâs worth reviewing in light of questions that can be raised regarding what is and isnât appropriate.
And thereâs more than meets the eye. For example, how does a tutor respond if a student asks about other students with whom they are working? If a student talks to a tutor about other school issues, not related to coursework, how should a tutor respond? Can peer tutors get together socially outside of the tutoring session, since they are typically on the same college campus or in the same high school?
Yes, there are many possibilities, and as the owner of a tutoring and/or test prep business, you should have some guidelines in place for tutors and students to follow. In a competitive, litigious, and politically correct society, you must make sure that you and your tutors arenât opening any doors to trouble.
Ethical issues may also arise. One on-campus director of tutoring services explained the situation as it had applied to him. âBefore commencing tutoring we were unfamiliar with the range of ethical issues facing a tutor. However, we were soon faced with situations of a sensitive nature. For example, a student approached one of us for another studentâs grade. To ensure confidentiality, we did not divulge the grade. Another ethical issue that arose was abandonment. It was important to not abandon students with emotional distress issues who came to see you when class was over. However, at the same time it was important to not neglect the next class of students waiting for tutorials to begin. To solve this issue we needed to be aware of appropriate avenues of assistance for student referral. For example, we could direct the student to the student counselor, academic skills adviser, or medical services staff. These ethical issues increased our awareness of and ability to cope with ethical issues.â Organizations such as the Association for the Tutoring Profession (atp.jsu.edu) have their own codes of ethics. You can build yours around the following 10 concepts and concerns:1. Contact between students and tutors is to be made through the tutoring facility, with the exception of phone calls to indicate that a tutor/student is running late or another such last-minute scheduling change.
2. Tutors must maintain strict confidentiality and privacy regarding grades, schoolwork, or other personal information about other students or tutors.
3. Tutors will be respectful and treat all students, parents, caregivers, and co-workers fairly and with dignity and respect regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, religion, gender, or socioeconomic background.
4. Tutors are obligated at all times to provide their best efforts to each and every student.
5. Tutors should limit any discussions not directly related to the work and study materials.
6. Tutors should never be alone with a student in a home or office facility.
